Ali “Imran – Family of Imran (3:52-53)
3:52
When Jesus sensed disbelief from his people, he asked, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah. We believe in Allah, so bear witness that we have submitted.”
3:53
˹They prayed to Allah,˺ “Our Lord! We believe in Your revelations and follow the messenger, so count us among those who bear witness.”

Verse 52 shows that the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) sought helpers in Allah’s cause only after encountering increasing hostility from the disbelievers. At first, he courageously fulfilled his mission alone, trusting in his Lord without seeking to gather followers prematurely. When support became necessary, Allah granted him devoted companions, demonstrating that steadfastness and sincerity in Allah’s path will attract true supporters at the right moment.
Despite this, the Bani Isra’il remained firm in their rejection, even resorting to hostility against him. The narrative then highlights the earliest followers of the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH), whose sincere faith was evident both in their declaration before their prophet and, as verse 53 describes, in their heartfelt supplication to their Lord—demonstrating their loyalty and reliance upon Allah. This is also highlighted in Surah As-Saf:
As-Saf – The Ranks (61:14)
O believers! Stand up for Allah, as Jesus, son of Mary, asked the disciples, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah.” Then a group from the Children of Israel believed while another disbelieved. We then supported the believers against their enemies, so they prevailed.

The Disciples
The term حَوَارِيّ (‘hawariyy’, singular of حَوَارِيُّون ‘al-hawariyyun’) found in verse 52, translated as “the disciples,” derives from the root حَوَر (hawar), which lexically signifies whiteness. In religious terminology, ‘hawariyy’ refers to the devoted disciples or companions of the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH), either due to the purity and sincerity of their hearts or, as some suggest, because of their white garments.
Similarly, the companions of the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ are known as صَاحِبِي (sahabi, plural: sahabah). According to some commentators, the number of the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH)’s disciples was twelve. Notably, the term ‘hawariyy’ is also used more generally to mean ‘helper’ or ‘supporter.’ This broader meaning is reflected in a hadith of the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ:
Narrated Jabir: On the day of Al-Ahzab (i.e. clans), Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, ‘Who will bring us the news of the people (i.e. the clans of Quraish infidels)?” Az-Zubair said, “I.” The Prophet (ﷺ) again said, “Who will bring us the news of the people?” Az-Zubair said, “I.” The Prophet (ﷺ) again said, “Who will bring us the news of the people?” Az-Zubair said, “I.” The Prophet (ﷺ) then said, “Every prophet has his Hawari (i.e. disciple, special helper); my disciple is Az-Zubair.

Allah gives Victory to the Believing Group
We then supported the believers against their enemies, so they prevailed.
While some among Bani Israel believed and others rejected, Allah granted victory and dominance to the true believers. With the advent of the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, this divine support was perfected, enabling the followers of Tawhid to prevail over all forms of falsehood. The Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ will remain steadfast upon the truth until the end of time, and in the final days, will join the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) in standing against Ad-Dajjal. This enduring triumph is a fulfilment of Allah’s promise to those who sincerely uphold His religion.
