Az-Zukhruf – The Ornaments of Gold (43:63-66)

43:63

When Jesus came with clear proofs, he declared, “I have come to you with wisdom, and to clarify to you some of what you differ about. So fear Allah, and obey me.

43:64

Surely Allah ˹alone˺ is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path.”

43:65

Yet their ˹various˺ groups have differed among themselves ˹about him˺, so woe to the wrongdoers when they face the torment of a painful Day!

43:66

Are they waiting for the Hour to take them by surprise when they least expect ˹it˺?

When the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) came with clear signs, he brought wisdom (حِكْمَةِ) to clarify matters of religious dispute among the Children of Israel. This wisdom represented the essential spirit of religion rather than mere ritualistic formalism.

The Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) arrived when the Children of Israel had become entangled in theological disputes and sectarian divisions. They had lost sight of faith’s true essence, becoming preoccupied with legalistic arguments while neglecting core spiritual principles.

His message was profoundly simple: “Fear Allah, obey me. Surely Allah alone is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him alone. This is the Straight Path.” This statement encapsulates tawhid (monotheism)—recognising Allah as the sole deity worthy of worship. The “Straight Path” (صِرَٰطٌۭ مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ) refers to upholding essential virtues: God-consciousness (فَٱتَّقُوا۟), sincere worship (فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ) , and obedience to divine guidance.

Despite this clear message, various groups differed regarding the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH). Some elevated him to divine status while others rejected him entirely. The Qur’an warns of severe consequences for those who wrongfully attributed divinity to him or denied his prophethood.

The Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH)’s mission was to restore religion’s spirit that had been obscured by excessive formalism and sectarian disputes. He reminded his people that salvation comes through following Allah’s true religion—based on fear of God, worship of Him alone, and following prophetic guidance—rather than human-devised theological complexities.
