Maryam – Mary (19:27-36)

19:27

Then she returned to her people, carrying him. They said ˹in shock˺, “O Mary! You have certainly done a horrible thing!

19:28

O  sister of Aaron! Your father was not an indecent man, nor was your mother unchaste.”

19:29

So she pointed to the baby. They exclaimed, “How can we talk to someone who is an infant in the cradle?”

Allah, the Exalted, informs us of the extraordinary events surrounding Siti Maryam (Mary) (عليها السلام) and the miraculous birth of the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH). After giving birth, Siti Maryam (Mary) (عليها السلام) returned to her people carrying the infant, causing great shock and dismay among them. They exclaimed, “O Mary! You have certainly done a horrible thing!” and reminded her of her noble lineage, unable to reconcile her apparent transgression with her family’s reputation for righteousness.

In response to their accusations, Siti Maryam (Mary) (عليها السلام), who had been commanded to observe a fast of silence, simply pointed to the baby. The people were bewildered, asking, “How can we talk to someone who is an infant in the cradle?”

Jesus’ (PBUH) First Miracle – Her Defended His Mother

At this moment, by Allah’s will, the infant Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) miraculously spoke:

19:30

Jesus declared, “I am truly a servant of Allah. He has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be a prophet.

19:31

He has made me a blessing wherever I go, and bid me to establish prayer and give alms-tax as long as I live,

19:32

and to be kind to my mother. He has not made me arrogant or defiant.

19:33

Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised back to life!”

Allah Does Not Take A Son!

19:34

That is Jesus, son of Mary. ˹And this is˺ a word of truth, about which they dispute.

19:35

It is not for Allah to take a son! Glory be to Him. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it is!

19:36

˹Jesus also declared,˺ “Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path.”

The Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) holds a position of great honour in Islam as a noble prophet and messenger of Allah. The Qur’an refers to him as “کَلِمَۃُ اللہِ” (Kalimatullah—the Word of Allah), an honorific title that signifies his miraculous creation through Allah’s divine command “Be!” without the conventional biological process involving a father.

The Qur’an establishes the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) as a “word of truth” (قَوْلَ الْحَقِّ), emphasising his authentic status between two extremes. While Christians elevated him to divine status as the son of Allah—a position that transgresses monotheism—the Jews maliciously denigrated him. Allah corrects both these erroneous positions, establishing the Messenger Isa (Jesus) (PBUH) in his rightful place as a chosen servant and messenger.
