4) The Messenger’s (Peace Be Upon Him) Mission

Author:

The Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) faithfully conveyed the message from Allah and educated his companions. This tradition has continued through the generations, passed down by the Tabi’in (those who followed the companions), then through the ulama, and finally reaching us today. But if we are to ask, what was his mission?

Al Ma’idah – The Table Spread (5:99-104)

5:99

The Messenger’s duty is only to deliver ˹the message˺. And Allah ˹fully˺ knows what you reveal and what you conceal.

5:100

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Good and evil are not equal, though you may be dazzled by the abundance of evil. So be mindful of Allah, O  people of reason, so you may be successful.”

5:101

O believers! Do not ask about any matter which, if made clear to you, may disturb you. But if you inquire about what is being revealed in the Quran, it will be made clear to you. Allah has forgiven what was done ˹in the past˺. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

5:102

Some people before you asked such questions then denied their answers.

5:103

Allah has never ordained the ˹so-called˺ baḥîrah, sâ’ibah, waṣîlah, and ḥâm camels. But the disbelievers just fabricate lies about Allah, and most of them lack understanding.

5:104

When it is said to them, “Come to Allah’s revelations and to the Messenger,” they reply, “What we found our forefathers practicing is good enough for us.” ˹Would they still do so,˺ even if their forefathers had absolutely no knowledge or guidance?

From the verses above, we can learn the following:

  • The Messenger’s (Peace Be Upon Him) mission was to convey (ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ).
  • One of the key messages is the distinction between good and evil, such as in matters of consumption (Halal and Haram): لَّا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْخَبِيثُ وَٱلطَّيِّبُ —with full context starting from verse 96.
  • To clarify what has been revealed to us in the Quran:

Next, observe how Allah teaches us adab (etiquette) in asking questions about the revealed messages. It is essential to refrain from questioning matters that have already been made clear and may cause unnecessary distress. Instead, focus on seeking understanding of what has been explicitly revealed in the Quran. And if you must ask, then why?

Because those before us questioned in the same manner but ultimately rejected the answers—such as the Children of Israel with Prophet Moses (Peace Be Upon Him) in Surah Al-Baqarah—as well as the disbelievers during the time of the Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him). This led to unnecessary burdens and complications in what had already been perfected for them. Persisting in such questioning can result in disbelief, rejecting Allah’s revelations (i.e., the Quran), and instead clinging to the misguided practices of their forefathers.

The necessity of obeying the Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) regardless.

An Nisa – The Women (4:64-65)

4:64

We only sent messengers to be obeyed by Allah’s Will. If only those ˹hypocrites˺ came to you ˹O Prophet˺—after wronging themselves—seeking Allah’s forgiveness and the Messenger prayed for their forgiveness, they would have certainly found Allah ever Accepting of Repentance, Most Merciful.

4:65

But no! By your Lord, they will never be ˹true˺ believers until they accept you ˹O Prophet˺ as the judge in their disputes, and find no resistance within themselves against your decision and submit wholeheartedly.
https://quran.com/4/64-65

The verses clearly state that Allah sent messengers to be obeyed by His will. Allah emphasises that those who wronged themselves ظَّلَمُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ (i.e., the hypocrites) will never truly believe until they accept the Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) as the ultimate judge in their disputes and wholeheartedly submit to his decisions without resistance.

Here, we can further solidify our understanding that true belief requires faith in Allah and obedience to Him. To fulfil this, we must unquestionably accept مُحَمَّد ﷺ as the Messenger of Allah. Our faith remains incomplete until we acknowledge the Messenger (Peace Be Upon Him) as the ultimate judge and fully accept his decisions in all matters of dispute.

We hope that you begin to approach the Quran with deep understanding and recognise the commitment required in our faith, rather than merely “believing” and assuming that it is sufficient. Only Allah knows best. Indeed, Allah has spoken the truth—صدق الله العظيم.

We will comprehensively discuss on how the messengers of Allah (Peace Be Upon Them) communicate to their people in the near future, (InshAllah, Allah’s will).
